  • LuminArte Gallery presents: LUSO-AMERICAN Surrealism of the

    March 22 - April 26. Opening Reception: Saturday March 22nd, from 7 – 10pm

DALLAS- LUSO-AMERICAN Surrealism of the 21st Century is a continuation of a series of exhibitions relating to Portuguese artist, Santiago Ribeiro´s project “International Surrealism Now.” This unique exhibition will feature works of Portuguese artists Victor Lages, Paula Rosa, Francisco Urbano, and Santiago Ribeiro, and American artists France Garrido, Joe MacGown, K.D. Matheson, Shahla Rosa, Steve Smith, and Olga Spiegel.

International Surrealism Now began in Coimbra, in 2010, when Santiago Ribeiro conceived a major exhibition which was organized by the Bissaya Barreto Foundation. The event was presented in Conímbriga, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Conimbriga Monographic Museum (second most visited museum in Portugal) and, subsequently, went to Paris, with the support of the Bissaya Barreto Foundation and GAPP – Portugal Presente Art Gallery. The exhibition was later presented in Madrid, with the support of Yamal Din and in Berlin once more organized by Santiago Ribeiro. Afterwards, Santiago partnered with artist Victor Lages, who developed the project” Utopia of Fantastic Art,” for the purpose of organizing exhibitions in Lisbon and in other international venues.

Surrealism, which was born after the first wold war, is characterized by its opposition to all social conventions, moral and logic. It is a movement immersed in dreams, instinct, desire, rebellion, and the liberty of life. It is also perhaps the movement most tied to imagination, a movement fully alive in the artistic and literary worlds. In Portugal, it is perhaps the link which ties these two worlds together. Prof. Perfecto Cuadrado said so aptly in one of his conferences: “The history of Surrealism, meaning anthologies, studies, catalogues (and exhibits) devoted to the so called International surrealism, needs to be divulged – the price, sometimes, in a simplified fight against other forms of simplification, when it is not against a total silence due to sectarianism, or ignorance whether French, Portuguese or International.” Surrealism through words, painting and sculpture continues, like life to be: insistent, concrete, daily and real. This exhibition in Paris, the birthplace of the movement, is proof that "International Surrealism" is still alive.

  • PORTUGUESE SURREALISM IN THE 21st CENTURY

SANTIAGO RIBEIRO AND PAULA ROSA EXHIBITION - PORTUGUESE SURREALISM IN THE 21st CENTURY

"Portuguese Surrealism in the 21st Century" is a project that aims to celebrate the Surrealism’s transversality understood as awareness in the face of civilization and culture, rejec...ting conventionalities and diving into the realm of absolute freedom of expression. Far from feeding sterile polemics and meta- perceptive languages, the project exalts the revolutionary and avant-garde aspects of the surrealist imagery, focused on the insight, the discovery, the internal development of the artist and in the importance of the metaphor, symbol and analogy.

As an art movement, Surrealism has its chronological origin perfectly defined in the history of art, in the context of the 20’s of the last century, a period of strong social and political uncertainty, an aspect which has been recurrent in the history of our civilization. Prevailing cultural beliefs in Europe, as well as human vulnerability, were being questioned facing a reality more and more difficult to understand and to accept. Surrealism sought to overcome the conventional and traditional perception of reality, developing an aesthetics based on the value of the Freudian findings about the Unconscious as a complement to the conscious life and the dream’s ability to communicate. It appears, therefore, as awareness, opposing to the conventions with freedom itself, replacing positivism by dreams, the unbelievable, the unusual, because it was felt that man overcomes the limitations of matter in the pursuit of abstract.
